Bread bowls can be purchased or made at home and can hold soups and other delicious foods
While many cooks agree that it's easier to purchase bread bowls, that may not always be possible nor as much fun. The smell of yeasty bread rising and then the aroma of them baking is simply wonderful. I highly recommend making your own if you have time.
We use a bread machine to knead the dough. A good French bread recipe works well. You'll want a "large loaf" to make two bowls that rise and bake to about six inches in diameter.
You'll also need small-sized round (8-inch diameter) casserole dishes to bake in and for the last rise. If they're crusty enough, you won't have to worry about break through once you've added foods. However, there is always the chance that when scooping out the interior, you'll break through. For thinner crusts, serve in a soup bowl to prevent spills.
Once the dough cycle is complete, turn it out onto a floured board. Let it rest for about 15 minutes. If you're using a French bread recipe, just split the dough in half and knead only enough to create a smooth round ball.
Coat the casserole dishes with cooking spray and the a light sprinkling of cornmeal. Place one dough section in each bowl. Cover lightly and place in a warm, draft-free place to rise for about one hour. The doughball should double in size and will be reasonably flat on the bottom and peak gently on top.
Preheat an over to 375º F. You can brush an egg wash over the top if desired. Bake for about 40-60 minutes or until the top is golden brown and hard. Remove and allow to cool just enough to handle. Slice off just a small portion of the top; remove a larger slice if using for dipping. Keep this "lid" to serve on the side or replace to keep foods warm and for presentation. Use a spoon and fork to carefully scoop out the dough.
If you're not serving right away, the exterior may soften. Simply return to the oven and it will crisp up again.
Bread bowls are the perfect accompaniment for a nice thick potato soup. They are also very festive for party dips and fondues. Make small portions as side servings.
