This traditional strata combines with downhome ingredients. It's ideal for breakfast or brunch.
Strata recipes abound and this is just one variation that you and your family or guests will certainly enjoy. Traditional stratas have two central ingredients: bread and cheese. From there, you can pile on anything else that suits your taste.
Like casseroles, stratas are best made the day ahead. Then, all that's left is to pop it in the oven for an hour and breakfast or brunch is served. This Country Brunch Strata is definitely a meal-in-one.
12 slices bread
Oil for sauteeing
Saute onion and set aside. Coat a 9 x 13 x 2 baking dish with cooking spray. Butter bread on one side only and place buttered side up in dish. Quarter the slices if desired for easier cutting when cooked. Place six slices in bottom of casserole. Cut hash brown cakes in half and lay on top. Sprinkle half the sausage and cheese across the hash browns and bread. Add the second layer of bread, buttered side up. Layer again with hash browns, sausage and cheese.
In a bowl, beat the eggs and stir in milk. Pour over the casserole. Cover and refrigerate until ready to bake.
Bring to room temperature and preheat an oven to 325 degrees. Bake for about one hour or until bubbly and done. You can cook it to any level of crispness on the bottom. If you want to spice it up a little, layer in salsa or jalapenos.
